Natural Ways to Energize

There are many moments where we all need a little more energy.  Our first instinct is to drink coffee, but if t’s past a certain time of day, that may not work for us.  There are other ways to stimulate yourself in more holistic ways. The other ways involve the use of our senses and by stimulates these in unusual ways. Here’s how to tap into your sensory energy system.

Energy through Touch

Aggressively thumping your chest - like Godzilla will energize your heart chakra.  Energy therapists call this the “four thumps” when you thump the middle of your chest four times.

Another technique is to rub (hard) around your ears, beginning at the sides of the temples by your ears and following the line around to the bottom of your neck.  So rub in an arc around your ear.

Immersing your face in cold water.  Fill a bowl with ice water and submerge your face.  If this isn’t possible, wipe your face off with a cold rag.  If none of these options are available. Try running your wrists under cold water - the inner part of your wrist.

Squeezing a stress ball during a meeting or doodling can also keep you alert.

Energy through Scent

Scent has the fastest route to the brain, accessing the limbic system that controls alertness and mood. Peppermint, eucalyptus, and rosemary are natural brain activators shown to stimulate the reticular activating system, the network responsible for wakefulness . Try keeping a small essential oil roller or peppermint inhaler nearby for an instant focus boost. You can also practice olfactory training—taking brief mindful sniffs of spices, citrus peels, or herbs—to strengthen your sense of smell and alertness .

Energy Through Sound

Sound directly influences brain waves. Fast-paced music, natural sounds clapping loudly or curated binaural beats set at beta frequencies (14–18 Hz) can prime your mind for clarity and focus .  We at Lehigh Valley Counseling clap like cheerleaders followed by a loud “let’s go” which energizes us.

Laughing - faking a laugh can cause you to become energized.  It seems silly when you begin the fake laugh sequence, but once you start doing, you will find that it feels more natural.  Fake it until you make it is a real thing.  Data shows that when you start your morning with a quick playlist that energizes you can really work.  It makes sense to use an energizing playlist when exercising and a calming playlist when relaxing

Energy Through Light

Your eyes are light sensors that cue the brain to wake up and release cortisol naturally. Open curtains early, look toward morning sunlight, or use a light therapy lamp during darker months . Surround yourself with vibrant colors too—studies show hues like yellow and turquoise boost psychological energy and optimism.

Taste for Revitalization

Burst-of-flavor experiences activate both taste and smell centers, instantly reviving mental alertness. Try a cold, fizzy drink or a few sips of citrus water—the bubbles and acidity stimulate nerves in your mouth and nose, waking up your brain almost instantly . Foods with natural zest (like ginger, mint, or lemon) are especially useful for mid-day fatigue.

Integrate All Five Senses

To create full sensory activation, blend multiple senses at once: sip warm tea while diffusing citrus oil, listen to upbeat music, and open a window for a breeze. Or you can just go to Costco. This integrated sensory stimulation encourages neural cross-talk that wakes up body and mind synergistically .

Closing Thought

Your senses are the gateways to your energy. By engaging them intentionally for just a few minutes a day, you can train your body to rise, focus, and create without depending on caffeine or stress. Wake up your world—the energy you need is already within your senses.
